9/11 New York

20 Year Anniversary of the 9/11/2001 Terrorist Attacks on The World Trade Center in New York City

As a  born New Yorker I was compelled to see first hand the devastation as soon as flights were renewed and Museums, etc. were trying to recover from that horrendous event. The site was still smoldering during my mid-October trip.

I used the Metropolitan Museum of Art (current) Catalog as my "canvas"/booklet to draw, collage, paint, as relay my feelings.

I spent one day exploring the entire perimeter of the site with my 8MM video recorder. It's 13 min. long. Here are portions of the video:

West Side With Makeshift First Responders Memorial

"Helping Hands", 2001, N.Y.,N.Y.
Tempera and Ash on Museum catalog page. 5 1/2" x 10 1/2"
(First Responders report finding rings and other personal belongings in the rubble.)
Collection of Josie & Johnathan Kaplow

3 Stills from my 13 min. Video

"Strength in Humanity", 2001, N.Y., N.Y.
Tempera and Ash on Museum catalog page. 5 1/2" x 10 1/2"
(First Responders supporting one another in the hot, wet, search and cleanup)
Collection of Ciro Flores & John Heinzerling

"Memories Lost in the Dust, 1", 2001, N.Y., N.Y.
Tempera and Ash on Museum catalog page. 5 1/2" x 10 1/2"
(First Responders searching for remains in the hot, wet, search and cleanup)
Collection of the artist

"The Ass at School", 2001, N.Y., N.Y.
Tempera and Ash on Museum catalog page. 5 1/2" x 10 1/2"
(Based on etchings by Peter Bruegal the Elder,16th century, MET Museum Catalog)
Collection of the artist

Painting on the mostly-empty plastic lid containing the ash/soot collected from a nearby potted plant (shown in video below). This was finished sometime after the others were finished and the pair of Blue Light Beams were installed as a memorial. The ash/soot was gathered before officials asked the public not to disturb a larger site perimeter .
"9/11 Light Memorial', 2001, N.Y., N.Y.
Ash and Soot on Plastic with Acrylic.
Collection of Sean Huston

"Twin Towers Gone", 2001
Collaged Post Card with paint, ash on paper
Front; Painting, Back; Description of process
(Never shown because someone said the eagle looked like a chicken so I felt bad.)
